World Exposition Aichi - Japan 2005

Based on the novella by Franz Kafka, published in 1915, and adapted by the avant-garde Spanish theatre company La Fura dels Baus, The Metamorphosis is a story about a travelings salesman, Gregor Samsa, who mysteriously morphs into a large insect-like monstrous vermin. The reason for the transformation is unknown. The story unfolds as Gregor gets more accustomed to his new state of being while is family struggles with the burden that he has become. His sister becomes his primary caregiver but after a while even she grows tired of the responsibility. This novella is widely considered to be one of the most influential works of fiction in the 20th century.

La Fura dels Baus performed an adapted version of this novella as part of the Spanish program at the World Exposition in Aichi, Japan in 2005. The theatre company is famous for redefining "space" in their productions by breaking down the "fourth wall" and changing the way the audience interacts with the performers.  Their ability to create the unexpected is what has given them international recognition.
