Renowned director, composer and viol player Jordi Savall i Bernadet travelled to Japan with his music ensemble Hespèrion XXI for a 3 concert tour in Japan. 2018 commemorates 150 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan, and Jordi Savall's concerts hosted in Japan will be in honour of this long standing relationship between these two important countries. The tour kicked off in Tokyo's Hamarikyu Asahi Hall on the 22nd of November.
The following day the Instituto Cervantes Tokyo the Maestro gave a talk about the characteristics of Baroque music that were interlaced with snips of music for a comprehensive learning experience by the audience. The event at the Cervantes was part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the institute in Tokyo. The Cervantes institute is not just a space to promote Spanish culture in Japan but its wide membership from other Spanish speaking countries makes it a focal point of Spanish, Central and South American cultures in Japan. The final two concerts of the tour were in Mitaka and Itami. The concert was titled "Folias y Canarios" which translates to "The Old World & the New World." The music that was selected for the concerts were from the period of King Carlos V and King Felipe II.
